Concord, NC-(September 27, 2013) William Byron celebrated his 2013 US Legends Young Lions National Championship in grand style with a series of heart thumping burnouts as he won his 28th race of the season at the Concord Speedway on Friday night September 27th. Byron put the exclamation point on his rookie season with a strong wire to wire performance at the ¼ mile oval in Concord, NC.
William started the night off with another pole position when he recorded a 13.69 on a cool fall evening to earn the number one starting position. The 15 year old racer jumped to an early lead and sped to a 5 car length win after a late race caution gave his competitors one more shot at the No. 25 race car, but Byron was up to the challenge and took the checkered flag for his historic win.
This win gives Byron the US Legends Young Lions National point’s championship in just his first season of racing. It was last November 11th that the Charlotte native raced his first time and since that inaugural race he has been winning at tracks up and down the east coast.
In victory lane the jubilant racer had lots to say. “I have so many people to thank,” exclaimed Byron. “None of this would be possible without the support of my Mom and Dad. I can’t thank Dennis Lambert enough for the great race cars he prepares and Rolfe and Steve for all of their support. I also want to thank all of the officials at Concord Speedway for the hard work they do to allow us to race. This is so amazing. I can’t believe that I am the Young Lions National Champion.”
The journey is only beginning for Byron as the planning for the 2014 season has already begun. For now the Charlotte Country Day sophomore can enjoy the thrill of his accomplishments and feel the excitement of being crowned the 2013 US Legends Young Lions National Point’s Champion.
