Lake Erie, Pa. (September 14, 2013)-William Byron added another notch to his rookie season’s win total when he captured the 20-lap U.S. Legends Young Lions Race of Champions event at Lake Erie (Pa.) Speedway. The event featured Young Lions state champions and the top 10 in national points in a winner-takes-all race highlighting the best 12 to 16-year-old Legends racers in the country.
Byron lined up his No. 25 racecar in the number one starting spot by virtue of being the current U.S. Legends Young Lions national points leader. Byron held the lead and quickly outdistanced the field until a late caution flag that bunched the field with just one lap remaining. The 15-year-old rookie got a great jump on the restart and took home the win in this prestigious event.
"Going into this race our intention was to go for the win and not hold back at all,” said the jubilant teen. “The race was a chance to show our strength as a team going into the National Championship race. We were able to accomplish this goal by winning this event. Winning the Race of Champions gives me a huge confidence boost to know that we are capable of winning the National Championship."
Following the victory lane celebration for the Race of Champions the sophomore at Charlotte Country Day School had to prepare for the biggest race of his life…the National Championship race with big championship ramifications on the line.
